The people of Elpitiya are using what’s known as “direct democracy” to ease the racial tension that is causing problems between the Singhalese majority and the Hindu Tamil minority in their community. This conflict resolution method involves all stakeholders of the dispute and requires them to come together and discuss the issue in order to find a common solution. This is a very old method but one that lends itself well to the modern problems faced by small but ethnically diverse rural settlements such as Elpitiya. This initiative is backed by local organisation Sarvadoya as well as others and has been implemented in over 50 communities across Sri Lanka.
